FULL DEFINITION
A power dialer is calling software that works through a list of leads automatically. It dials one number, waits for an answer, and connects the rep the moment a human picks up. If the call goes unanswered or hits voicemail, it moves to the next number without the rep doing anything.
The point is to remove the dead time around a call rather than the call itself. On a manual list a rep spends a large part of their day reading a number, typing it, waiting through four rings, hanging up and starting again. None of that is selling. A power dialer collapses it, so the rep's attention goes to the conversation and the notes afterwards.
Power dialers are sometimes called progressive dialers. Both describe the same one-at-a-time behaviour, and both are distinct from a parallel dialer, which calls several numbers simultaneously.
A power dialer is not an autodialer in the regulatory sense. Because a rep is present and connected at the moment of answer, there is no abandoned call and no silence on the line, which is what most calling regulation is actually concerned with.
WHY IT MATTERS
Call volume is the metric most sales floors optimise, and it is the wrong one on its own. What matters is conversations, and conversations are volume multiplied by connect rate. A power dialer raises the volume side without touching the quality of the conversation, which is why it tends to be the single largest productivity change a calling team makes.
It also changes what a rep does between calls. With manual dialling, the gap is spent on admin. With a power dialer, the gap is spent deciding what to say to the next person, because their record is already on screen when the call connects.
The trade-off worth knowing about is pacing. A dialer that moves too fast leaves no room to log an outcome properly, and a call log full of blank dispositions makes every downstream metric unreliable. A good implementation gives the rep control over when the next call starts.
HOW LEADEY DOES IT
Leadey's power dialer runs inside the CRM, so the lead record, the timeline and the disposition buttons are on the same screen as the call. You can dial from a campaign or from any Smart View, and a countdown before each call gives you room to finish your notes.
Calls are recorded in dual channel, which means the rep and the prospect are on separate audio tracks. That is what makes exact per-speaker transcripts possible rather than a model guessing who spoke. Answering machine detection can drop a pre-recorded voicemail and move on without you sitting through the greeting.
